Happy Holidays from Chester Upland Youth Soccer!

Fun, memorable experiences. Encouragement to make healthy lifestyle choices. The comforting feeling that people truly care about you.

All this is what we try to deliver to the children we serve, and we wish the same for you and your loved ones in 2022.

Thank you as always for your support of our work.

The Return of After-School Soccer

Throughout the earlier months of the pandemic, we found creative ways to engage children at home and in carefully constructed events, like our new Goals in Gardens initiative. This fall, we’ve been overjoyed to return to fully in-person soccer after school at five locations, and are back to serving 250 children each week. Read about the magical end to our fall season here.

From the start of the new school year, educators have had their hands full helping children readjust to routines. We are fortunate to work with some of the best in the business. We offer a huge thank you to all of the Site Directors, Coach-Mentors, and others who have helped make after-school soccer possible and successful:

Our team includes Andrea Closurdo, Chris Shavers, Crystal Brooks, Cyprus Morris, Denise Mosley, Edna Tribbett, Emma Reilly, Gaby Concepcion, Giana DiGiacomo, Jenna Waldron, Jimmy Pavlovsky, Jody Zamonski, John Hurst, Kaitlyn Decker, Kathy McGovern, Kelly Nagle, Leo-Paul Wahl, Leslie Crudup, Matt Effinger, Megan Dougherty, Michael Bofinger, Oliver Steinglass, Sara Long, Shannon Hollar, Tamia Cottman, Tara Orlando, Tiaira Jackson Butler, Tina L. Jackson, Titus Robinson, Valerie Weber, Vinny Cserscevits and Yolanda Jackson.

Recently, one of our Coach-Mentors wrote a story about his experience with us, both what he has been able to give to our program and the emotional rewards he has been able to get in return. Click here to read his story!

Partnerships Make All the Difference

This time of year especially, we enjoy reflecting on all the wonderful people at partner organizations that have made a difference for CUYS and beyond. Here’s a small sampling:

  • Lifewerks and Family & Community Services of Delaware County help us supply CUYS families with groceries by the truckload each month.

  • Community organizations have allowed us to bring soccer to Chester’s Fall Fest, Delaware River Festival and other special events.

  • DICK’S Sporting Goods not only provides regular financial support but also recently shipped boxes of warm hoodies and socks for distribution to our kids.

  • Mitzvah Circle seeks to make products more accessible to families on life’s edge. We have brought thousands of diapers and other toiletries to the families of CUYS with their help this year.

  • Springfield FC and FC Delco, two local soccer clubs, have stepped up to collect snacks and cash donations for CUYS, all of which we put to great use. Please alert your favorite soccer club that we would be delighted to work with them in creative ways as well.

  • Widener University and Swarthmore College students have played a big role in our children’s lives by serving as Coach-Mentors.

We welcome partnerships big and small. Please contact jeannine@chesteruplandyouthsoccer.org to generate a service project for your family’s upcoming special event, or in connection with your place of employment or another group, or just because you want to make a difference.

What’s New for 2022? Youth Development United!

Recognizing the power of mentorship and positive life experiences even beyond the soccer pitch, Chester Upland Youth Soccer seeks to give kids more access to a range of activities such as gardening, music, STEM…anything and everything that is fun and productive.

To help support these non-soccer activities, Chester Upland Youth Soccer has started Youth Development United.

Chester’s Mentoring Initiative Celebrates First Anniversary

In November of 2020, CUYS helped create Chester’s Mentoring Initiative. The group is now made up of over 100 different individuals and organizations that meet monthly over Zoom to hear relevant presentations, discuss mentoring “superpowers,” and to engage in discussions on ways to better serve Chester families.
